Myths
Schizophrenia being such a complicated mental illness and one that has been hard to define. Has opened a window for an abundant amount of myths and treatments for those suffering from the disease. An example of the misconceptions that individuals have created in regards to the disorder are that the by removing one's intestines it will reduce the affect of the disease. Also that men can determine their risk of getting schizophrenia by the length of their fingers.
Current Evaluation of Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia currently through it's genetic evaluation has proven to be a combination of eight different mental disorders, combined into one. The finding was brought about through Dr. c. Robert Cloninger's study at Washington University School of Medicine.
In which Cloninger found that schizophrenia is caused by a combination of genetic disorders that clustered together create a set of symptoms. This leading to his juxtaposition between breast cancer treatments and schizophrenia. Stating, that a more effective way to evaluate the disease would be to examine the genetic composition while in it's early stages and after the person has developed the mental illness. In order to `effectively break down what treatments and drugs would best suit the individual, thus limiting the number of bothersome side effects that are caused by most medication for the treatment of schizophrenia. |
